Mawson’s Huts Replica Museum

About Mawson’s Huts Replica Museum

Rich in history, Mawson’s Huts Replica Museum stands as a powerful homage to the brave souls of Australia and New Zealand who ventured forth on their 1911-14 Australasian Antarctic Expedition. Built only 200 metres from where these hearty explorers set sail so many years ago, this museum links modern generations with the incredible accomplishments of those adventurers while raising funds for ongoing conservation efforts at Cape Denison. An educational centre that honours both their legacy and courage, it is an inspiring reminder of human ambition against all odds!

Step back in time to the “Heroic Age” of Antarctic exploration and discover a unique insight into life on this unforgiving continent with Mawson’s Huts Replica Museum. Constructed using heritage architecture, intricate detail was added thanks to generous businesses & individuals who donated goods and their time – all profits from which are directed towards preserving these historic huts in Cape Denison. On-site staff & volunteers will provide interesting elucidation about Antarctica during its age of discovery for both individual guests and large groups alike!

What to do at Mawson’s Huts Replica Museum

Take a journey back in time to Antarctica’s early exploration days with Mawson’s Huts Replica Museum. Crafted and designed by heritage carpenters who worked at Cape Denison on the conservation of huts, this replica stands true to life as they carefully collected hundreds of photographs and measurements used to create it. The same Baltic Pine cladding & flooring sourced from Scandinavia were imported into Australia just like that supplied for the expedition over 100 years ago! Experience an authentic insight into Antarctic history through this detailed replication featuring saw cuts, corners and tongue & grooves exactly matching those found originally near Cape Denison all those years ago.

Visiting Mawson’s Hut Replica Museum is a unique chance to immerse yourself in the heroic era of Antarctic exploration and relive history. Here, you will encounter an exact recreation of 18 courageous men’s huts that they used during their Australian Antarctic Expedition (AAE) from 1911-14 at Cape Denison! Through replicating this living environment under incredibly challenging conditions, 3000km south of Hobart on Australia’s Eastern side border within Antarctica – we are able to celebrate Sir Douglas Mawson’s epic achievement as country leader for the first fully funded AAE by Australians celebrating when our nation was merely over ten years old. An awe-inspiring opportunity thanks to Dale Baldwin.
